Training and development strategy

Our training and development strategy focuses on providing opportunities to develop all employees and is central to the achievement of our business objectives.

We’ve been accredited under the Investors in People scheme since 1997, and with Gold status confirmed once again in February 2019, we can demonstrate a long-term commitment to the training and development of all our employees.

Regular assessment of training needs

To help employees develop their careers and to identify and provide appropriate training and development opportunities, everyone receives an appraisal at least annually.

Appraisals provide a method to track each individual’s progress and identify opportunities to develop them into further roles, thereby supporting our overall succession planning objectives.

Developing future leaders

Management development is a core focus to support wider succession planning, as well as developing more female employees to increase the pool of available internal candidates.

In the last financial year, development initiatives included:

  • work to embed the internal mentoring programme, accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), to help support succession planning strategy and develop future leaders
  • participation in the Women Ahead 30% Club cross-company mentoring scheme
  • a senior leadership conference and two senior leadership development centres

Supporting professional study

There are typically over 100 people completing professional qualifications at any one time across our company and we provide financial support to these individuals.

Nurturing talent

We draw down on Apprenticeship Levy funds to support our development objectives and, during 2019, our internal Management Academy was certified with the CMI to facilitate this.

We currently have 41 apprentices across a range of specialist and operational roles, including IT, finance, underwriting and first line management.

Higher than average training days

On average, our employees received 6.9 days training in 2019, significantly higher than the average figure quoted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development of between 2.8 and 3.3 days for the private sector.
