Do you already work within mortgages and want to make the next step to becoming a mandated underwriter? Or maybe you have good communication and analytical skills and want to follow a career path in mortgages? If you like a challenge, and have the commitment, our full- time trainee underwriter role may be for you.

Purpose of the role

To work alongside mandate underwriters, learning on the job, whilst also undertaking formal training. Dealing with post, answering and making telephone calls, assessing cases, producing offers. Maintaining service levels whilst ensuring the company’s credit policy and procedures are adhered to. The intention is to prepare the job-holder to obtain an underwriting mandate.

Duties & responsibilities
  • Preparing outstanding requirements letters
  • Communicating directly with financial intermediaries and customers, conveying underwriting decisions and case updates
  • Analysing and assessing all pre-completion incoming post
  • Assessing willingness and ability to pay
  • Analysing bank statements and company accounts accurately
  • Reviewing and assessing valuation reports
  • Carrying out Know Your Customer (KYC) verification checks
  • Collating documentation to allow the underwriter to assess the case
  • Preparing detailed summary and recommendation for the underwriter
  • Liaising with Completion Officers with regard to ad hoc mortgage conditions where appropriate
  • Understanding of the Mortgage lifecycle
  • Understanding of criteria and the ability to apply credit policy and lending guidelines to underwriting decisions
  • Knowledge and understanding of personal and company credit searches and credit scoring
  • Previous experience of mortgage enquiries and the mortgage process
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Good English and mathematical skills

Qualifications and experience

Grade C or above GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics. Previous experience of mortgage enquiries and the mortgage process is not essential. The role requires the trainee underwriter to work towards CeMap

Working hours

37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm (one hour for lunch)
