International Women's Day 2021

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

Observed since the early 1900s, the day marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Diversity and inclusion are important elements of our people strategy at Paragon and we are delighted to join the celebration.

"Believe in yourself"

“Don’t be put off applying for a new role just because you don’t meet all the criteria from the outset. Always think about how you can apply the experience you already have to your next challenge and then make plans to fill the gaps as soon as you can. Stay focused on your goal, stay resilient and keep learning.”

"Know your goal"

“There’s more than one way to get where you want to go. If someone is telling you that you can’t do something you’re interested in, show them they are wrong. Know your goal, reach out to people who will help you and listen to their advice. You will be successful.”

"Keep your team involved"

“I treat people how I like to be treated – with kindness and respect. During the pandemic, we’ve all been challenged in different ways, so remember to acknowledge each individual’s situation and give lots of recognition for everyone’s contribution."

"Be curious"

“I have been lucky to engage with some inspiring mentors during my career. I have also been supported by great bosses who have trusted me to carry out my responsibilities. I try to reflect on work done and whether there are areas for improvement. I have always been curious and learning new things has ensured that my development never stagnates.”

"Enjoy new opportunities"

“I feel very lucky, the company has always been very flexible with helping me balance my personal situation with work. When my life outside of work took a difficult turn, I felt totally supported and I am grateful that I have gradually been able to enjoy new opportunities and develop in my role.”

"In the Risk department, we have a good gender split at all levels. I am certain that we are a better department for this balance."

Businesses always work better when they reflect their customers. A diverse workforce brings a balance of thoughts, ideas and ways of working – and an equal gender split is an important part of this.

"Across Paragon, we have several initiatives in place to train, retain and motivate our female employees and it’s important we continue to push forward with this as a key priority. This will take time, but we are committed to creating a more balanced leadership team."

Diversity targets

As part of our commitment under HM Treasury’s Women in Finance Initiative, we have set a target for 35% female representation in senior management by January 2022.

At September 2020, almost 34% of senior management positions at Paragon were held by women.
